What is Beta Reading?

Beta reading is an important step in the writing process where a writer receives feedback from a reader before publishing or querying agents. A beta reader approaches your manuscript as a member of your target audience and provides honest, thoughtful feedback on how the story works as a whole.

Rather than focusing on grammar or sentence-level corrections, beta reading looks at the big-picture elements of a story—pacing, character development, plot clarity, emotional impact, and overall reader engagement. The goal is to help you see your story the way a reader will. Fresh eyes can catch confusing moments, slow sections, or emotional beats that may not be landing as intended, helping you strengthen your manuscript before moving on to editing or querying.

What Beta Reading is Not

While beta reading can be incredibly helpful, it’s important to understand what it does and does not include.

Beta reading is not developmental editing or line editing. My focus is on providing reader feedback and identifying areas where the story may need clarification, strengthening, or adjustment.


This means I do not:

  • Rewrite sections of your manuscript

  • Provide detailed grammar corrections

  • Edit sentences line-by-line

  • Restructure your manuscript

Instead, I focus on how the story feels from a reader’s perspective, highlighting strengths as well as areas that may benefit from revision.

What My Beta Reading Includes

When you work with me, I carefully read your manuscript and provide thoughtful feedback designed to strengthen your story while preserving your unique voice.

My feedback covers:

  • Plot & Structure
    Does the story make sense? Are there plot holes or confusing moments? Does the overall narrative feel cohesive and satisfying?
  • Pacing
    Are there sections that drag or move too quickly? Does the tension build effectively?
  • Character Development
    Do the characters feel believable and engaging? Are their motivations clear and consistent?
  • Emotional Impact
    Do key moments land emotionally? Will readers connect with the characters?
  • Worldbuilding
    Is the setting immersive and easy to understand? Are details introduced naturally?
  • Reader Experience
    Where might readers feel confused? Which moments are the most engaging or memorable?
  • You’ll receive a written feedback report covering these areas, along with notes and suggestions to guide your revisions. My goal is to provide honest, constructive feedback while also highlighting what’s already working well in your manuscript.

Beta Read Pricing

My beta reading rate is $0.005 USD per word.

This rate allows me to carefully read your manuscript and provide thoughtful, detailed feedback to help you strengthen your story.

For shorter manuscripts, novellas, or partial manuscripts, the minimum beta reading fee is $175 USD. This applies to any project under 35,000 words, since smaller manuscripts still require the same level of careful reading and feedback preparation.

Turnaround time depends on manuscript length and current availability. Most projects are completed within 2–6 weeks.

Why I Beta Read

Stories have always been incredibly important to me. As both a reader and a writer, I understand how much time, creativity, and vulnerability go into creating a manuscript. Writing a book is a huge undertaking, and thoughtful feedback can make a world of difference during the revision process.

Beta reading allows me to support other writers while doing something I genuinely love—reading stories and helping them grow stronger.

As an author myself, I approach manuscripts with both a reader’s perspective and an understanding of storytelling craft. I know the challenges writers face when revising a draft and preparing their work for the next stage, whether that’s further editing, querying agents, or self-publishing.
